I'm sure some of you have seen the fic I wrote, "Visitors From Boston". That fic was was a crossover based on the television show Crossing Jordan, which has been my favorite show of the last few years. That show has gotten cancelled, and me along with dozens of other fans are angry. Shows get cancelled all the time, and the cancellation in itself isn't what is angering. The worst part of the cancellation is the way NBC treated the show.
How did they treat Crossing Jordan you say? First they give it
a premire date in October on a new night and time, then change it
with no notice moving it back to its old time starting in January.
Not only did they give viewers no notice, but when it came time
they gave the show NO promotion, much like they did all season.
Casual viewers of the show had no idea when it came back, or if
it was coming back at all, and didn't watch. This is what caused
the dip in the ratings from season five to season six.
If that wasn't bad enough, they then moved the show to
Wednesday's across from American Idol, the number one ratings
getter. Not even CBS can pull viewers away from AI (although they
do alright with Criminal Minds, another show Jordan was put
against).
Of course what really angered me was the fact that NBC made the
decision to cancel the show on the Friday before the season
finalie aired, giving the show and it's writers no chance to tie
up story lines that have been been there for years, such as who
killed Jordan's mother, and will Woody and Jordan ever have a
real chance. They addressed a few things in the finalie as they
probably suspected it would be the last episode, but it wasn't
enough to satisfy fans of the series. Most shows that have had
that long of a run know when their last season is going to be and
they have a chance to tie up loose ends. NBC didn't have the
decancy to give them that much.
Crossing Jordan was an excellent series about Boston medical
examiner Jordan Cavanaugh and her friends in the morgue and
police department. It's one of the few shows that you could
connect with the characters and feel strongly about them one way
or the other. If you like a good drama they still air reruns on
A&E, and season one is promised to us on DVD in the near
future.
My only consolation is that everyone including people that work
for NBC feel as though the network is full of idiots and that
their fall lineup isn't worth crap and that they won't be
climbing out of the cellar anytime soon. The way they treat their
shows and their fans, it will be a long time before they are a
major player again.
Crossing Jordan will live on in the world of fanfiction. Keep an eye out for a stand alone written by me about the Crossing Jordan team, as a sort of season seven premire. There are also a ton of good stories going up at fanfiction.net.
Thank you all for listening to my ranting about Crossing Jordan.
